How to build an emteria-based Android POS system

To build an Android-based POS system, you’ll need to:

#1 Install emteria on Raspberry Pi (or the hardware of your choice). 

Here's a brief guide on how:

  1. Sign up here (free) and confirm your email address.
  2. Get your complimentary voucher delivered straight to your inbox.
  3. Log in and download the emteria installer, compatible with both Windows and Linux.
  4. Inserted an SD card (32 GB) into your computer or card reader.
  5. Launch the installer. Login and select the 'Live' release channel, then choose the Raspberry Pi 4B or 5 as your device and install the latest Android version.
  6. The installation wizard will walk you through the steps to set up Android on your Pi.
  7. Insert your SD card into your Raspberry Pi and power it on.
  8. Congratulations! Your Pi is now up and running with Android.
  9. Activate your free license to unlock all of emteria's functionalities and features.

#2 Install the necessary Android POS software on the device.

When choosing POS software, opt for software with customizable setting, integrations, and user-friendly interfaces to ensure a great customer experience. 

Customized versions of Android, like emteria’s OS, typically can’t or won’t use the Google Play Store for security reasons. However, you can usually get the necessary Android POS software APKs from your POS app solution provider, or you can try alternative application stores such as F-Droid, or develop your own custom solution.

#3 Add any additional Android point of sale peripherals. 

Android on Raspberry Pi supports a range of common peripherals, including different touchscreen displays. Many of the standard USB devices like scanners will work out-of-the box. Feel free to try out new peripherals and let us know if they don't work!

#4 Put the device into Android kiosk mode once it’s ready to deploy. 

Emteria’s kiosk mode comes as an out-of-the-box feature that (1) completely locks down the Android POS System so that end users can’t access the device settings and (2) keep the device permanently on, which isn’t possible in standard Android. 

  1. Navigate to the emteria Settings on your device within the App Drawer.
  2. Choose Kiosk and autostart settings.

  5. Unlock the settings by tapping the screen ten times at any time.

Which Android POS software should you use?

There’s no point in reinventing the wheel.
